Patience and persistence pays off for Paul

Since moving around New South Wales as a child with his dad’s dam maintenance job, Paul Bedford has had his feet firmly on the ground.

The engine specialist has been with Tamworth’s Retorque Engine Reconditioning and Engineering since he started as an apprentice in 1995.

Now Managing Director, Paul purchased the business, which opened in 1977, with a partner in February this year. It has seven staff.

Retorque works with all petrol and diesel engines – new or old – and is sometimes asked to recondition vintage car engines, including a priceless old Bentley.

The team painstakingly works on the original. “They have a white metal bearing that has to be prepped and machined,” Paul explains. “It’s very time consuming.”

Paul and his team are also in demand for their full in-house engine reconditioning service, diesel fuel injection service, drive line and industrial balancing work.

Retorque is a long-standing DEUTZ Australia key dealer and recently enjoyed a visit from Managing Director Craig Chamberlin and Dealer Development Manager Shane Moretto.

The business uses all DEUTZ products including engine rebuild kits, filters, belts and any breakdown parts required.

Paul likes the range, reliability, fuel economy and ease to repair. He has dealt with DEUTZ for 20 years and found it “excellent” at all levels. “They know their stuff; they are efficient,” he says. “Everybody there is good to deal with.”

After moving a lot as a child, Paul loves the stability of working for one business in one town, although things do get hectic during the Tamworth Country Music Festival. “It is great for local business,” he says.

Running a business is consuming, but Paul enjoys wakeboarding with his ski boat and camping. “There’s three dams within about 70 kilometres,” he says. “But two of them don’t have much water at the moment.”
