A can-do attitude, elite service and great communication have seen Shaw Diesels named DEUTZ New Zealand Dealer of the Year for the fourth time running.
It’s the fifth win overall for the Auckland-based business, which last year opened a branch in Christchurch.
Dave Shaw started Shaw Diesels in 1988 and it has sold and serviced DEUTZ engines since 2002. Wife Jenny is still a director and son Pete now runs things day to day.
Pete is also a director and thrilled to win again after a huge effort serving customers during the pandemic, which has involved being creative and keeping it simple.
“If someone calls up, we tend to try and do everything as fast as possible to help them out,” he says. “We don’t make it too technical. We try to simplify the job for the customer.”
No job too big or small
The growing team at Shaw Diesels is known for quality diesel engine sales, service, parts, repairs, and rebuilds.
Pete says young staff members also love working on high-tech DEUTZ generators and engines. “It’s more interesting for the younger generation,” he says.
After more than 30 years in charge, Dave has taken a back seat but still helps. A qualified marine systems engineer, Pete is also still on the tools.
No job is too big or too small. Recent projects have included:
- Suppling DEUTZ generators to power critical equipment for the Antarctic Research Centre in the Antarctica ice fields
- Using DEUTZ engines to power specialty rail support machines.
- Supplying of DEUTZ Power Solutions generators for aqua culture power supply across multiple sites
- Opening the Christchurch branch during the pandemic in February 2021 and employing its first full time engineer in October 2021.
A family affair
Shaw Diesels remains a family affair, which is part of its strength, but Pete’s sister Rebecca works on a farm.
DEUTZ has also been like family during the pandemic, with technicians on hand to answer questions for Shaw Diesels staff unable to attend international training.
“We picked their brains a bit more,” Pete says. “We talk to Australia 30 times a day. We get on well with them.”
Pete is proud to win the award, which is important to the business. “It’s nice to be able to tell people that we’re the number one dealer in the country,” he says.
DEUTZ Dealer Development Manager Shane Moretto says Shaw Diesels has maintained a high level of support and service for DEUTZ customers on New Zealand’s north and south islands, despite government-imposed restrictions.
“Through these times, Shaw Diesels has managed to meet, and exceed in many cases, customer requirements,” he says.
