From India to Malaysia and then Melbourne

Sowmya was born in the southern part of India near Hyderabad where she grew up with her parents and older sister and brother. In December 2018, Sowmya migrated to Australia with her husband. She says the move to Australia was ‘a dream come true’ and choosing Melbourne as their forever home was an easy decision to make.

“We had no other thought but Melbourne as we love nature and it was ranked the most liveable city for more than five years in a row. Also, my husband is a coffee lover and where in Australia can you get a better coffee than in Melbourne? We also love the city’s chillier weather,” says Sowmya.

Before settling in Australia, the couple and their eldest child, Lucky, now eight, spent a year living and working in Malaysia. While there, they made the most of exploring the country.

“We visited famous places like the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Zoo Negara in Selangor and the Genting Highlands. We also visited Langkawi Island and enjoyed boat rides, water sports and walking on the Langkawi Sky Bridge. That was a memorable year,” says Sowmya.

Sowmya joined DEUTZ as a Purchasing Administrator in October 2022 after working in production and warehouse administration for two other companies in Melbourne. An opportunity to use and broaden her experience in administration and procurement encouraged Sowmya to apply for a role at DEUTZ.

She has qualifications in supply chain processes like procurement, production and logistics and she is familiar with SAP and MS Office applications.

“Day-to-day my role involves purchasing activities – like creating purchase orders, communicating with vendors, receiving raw materials, reporting and being part of inter-departmental discussions,” explains Sowmya.

“I’ve always been known as a hard worker since I began my career and I like to maintain consistency in everything I do. I enjoy exploring any aspect of my work in depth and being knowledgeable about business and system updates. I’ve developed greater team engagement skills and have learned more about vendor communication, too.”

Joining the business has brought Sowmya both professional and personal rewards.

“I’ve made the most of some great learning opportunities since joining DEUTZ and all the staff are very friendly, which has made learning even more enjoyable,” she says.

“There isn’t just one thing about DEUTZ that I like – there are a number of aspects. My leaders are understanding and supportive, my colleagues are friendly and I’ve been able to develop my skills and knowledge. All those things combined make DEUTZ a great place to work for me.”

Away from her desk, Sowmya is a busy mum to eight-year-old Lucky and one-year-old Rishaan, also known as Sunny.

“Lucky loves playing all kinds of sports and also loves the PS4 and watching YouTube videos. Sunny just loves exploring our house,” says Sowmya.

“When I’m not at work you’ll most likely find me taking care of my house and my two cheeky kids!”
