Keeping DEUTZ in the family

Ted Kuhlwind worked for DEUTZ in Germany before moving to Melbourne and marrying his Australian wife Lorna. It was only natural, then, that Ted would sell DEUTZ products in his diesel engine business.

Ted established LK Diesel Service Pty Ltd with business partner Lloyd Lang 50 years ago in 1967, after arriving in Australia to build buses. When Ted finished the bus building, he worked for DEUTZ as service technician, fixing trucks, buses and tractors, before starting his business.

Sons Mike and Bernard now own and manage LK Diesel. Known for being reliable and efficient, it services country trains, mining equipment, construction equipment, generators, pumping units and airport ground support equipment.

It supplies and services industrial diesel engines, generators and pump sets including, but not limited to mining, rail, construction and agriculture in Australia and the Asia/Pacific rim.

Mike is Service/Workshop Manager and Bernard is Office/IT Manager. Bernard’s son, Chris, also works with the business. Mike says although they are retired, Ted and Lorna still like to come in and visit a lot.

With three generations involved, this family business knows its stuff. “We have strong family values and lots of experience in many areas,” Mike says. “We understand our customers’ requirements.”

LK Diesel, which won an award for being the best performing Australian DEUTZ dealer in 2016, proudly sells all DEUTZ engine models and uses experience honed over many years to match customer needs with the right product.

Mike says DEUTZ engines are top quality and come in air, oil and water-cooled options.

“We like the simplicity of the air-cooled engines and technologically advanced water-cooled engines,” he says. “For irrigation pumps, DEUTZ air cooled are the best. There is no water to corrode the insides of the engine during the non-irrigation season.”

The Kuhlwind family has a long and proud partnership with DEUTZ built on trust, experience and a mutual respect for the product. “We know the DEUTZ staff like family,” Mike says. “DEUTZ has a great online parts system, and wide-ranging tech information which is easy to use.”
